Even if you do struggle while trying to locate fish, don't give up! By trying different spots you may even find new bass fishing territory! Not all lakes have big bluegill. You may have to settle for catching a few dozen 6" fish instead of reeling in one 9 incher after another. According to GameandFishMag.com, "Waters have to have just the right combination of bluegill density, food and predators to grow bluegills to the max"(How to Fish.., 2016).
Strategies for catching bluegill
Live Bait/Bobber Rig: This is the most common technique used for bluegill fishing. Anglers use a small bait (worms, crickets, spikes) on a little hook. A bobber is used to detect bites and to control how far down the bait falls. This is a great strategy for beginners because it is very efficient and easy to use.
Ice Fishing (Jigs): This is another well used strategy for ice fishing. Fishermen use extremely small jigs tipped with wax worms and spikes. Sometimes this requires a lot of patience because fish aren't usually as aggressive in the winter.
